Inspired and motivated by the accomplishments of internationally respected Professor Kwaku Ohene-Frempong, MD. Sickle Gene International Foundation aims to accelerate and expand detection & treatment early in life, provide services to prevent infections, strokes and pain, increase overall survival and improve quality of life.

The Sickle Gene International Foundation strives to save lives and eliminate the extreme pain and suffering that millions of people around the world with sickle cell disease experience by supporting high-quality screening, medical treatment, psychosocial support, and research for improved treatments and a cure.

Screening & Follow-up

  • Universal newborn screening (NBS) for disease detection and follow-up care and counseling
  • Transcranial doppler (TCD) screening to identify those at high risk for stroke and initiate therapies for stroke prevention

Research

  • Fund high quality research for improved access to treatments.
  • Fund high-quality research for accessible curative therapies.

Medical Treatment & Psychosocial Support

  • Expert management of the complications of sickle cell disease which can affect multiple parts of the body, cause pain, disability, organ damage and decreased survival
  • Sustainable access to high level disease modifying medications/treatments
  • Compassionate, respectful and culturally competent care indicating an understanding of medical and psychosocial needs, incorporating  shared decision-making
